Monique is the most inconsistent character I believe I have ever had the pleasure of reading.Ī fun middle-grade adventure novel, Etiquette & Espionage is the sort of book you have to be in the right mood to read. She is all over the place! I found that sometimes she acted like a 14-year-old, at other times she acted like she was 30 and even others she acted her usual age of 16-going-on-17. The only character I struggle with is Monique. Everyone knew girls couldn’t be werewolves. Sidheag muttered something about who would want to be a lady when should could be a werewolf, which everyone politely ignored. Professor or student, the dialogue is absolutely on point witty, lighthearted, fun, and devious all at the same time.I couldn’t be happier. Plus, good vampires and werewolves?! I honestly think that Professor Braithwope and Niall are my two favorite professors. Their unique personalities were not well explored in this novel, but I am excited to see how they develop in the future. Agatha, Sidheag, and Dimity are a well-rounded cast of best friends. I can forgive that as all her friends feel more appropriate for 14-year-olds. Speaking of more, the cast of characters is another thing which will bring me back to this series! Sophronia is fun and witty if acting a bit old for her age. Really, Sophronia, it makes me most uncomfortable how you manage to sort everything out every time I faint. Fun, frivolous, frothy, and uniquely Victorian. More, please! Whether in the sky or on the ground, every setting stood crystal clear in my mind. Coupled with steam-powered robotic servants, sneaky steampunk weaponry, and espionage tools, and mechanimals (absolutely ingenious), I never doubted the world of Sophronia and her friends. The dirigibles latched together to create Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality is a brilliantly vivid setting. Carriger obviously understands this world, the rules, and what makes it sparkle.

Here is where Carriger’s novel shines: The setting. Now, part of this might be due to the fact that Finishing School is a series set 25 years earlier in the same universe as Parasol Protectorate. Mummy says I daydream overmuch and ought to learn to kill something once in a while.

Etiquette & Espionage is a book you read for the setting and characters. But this isn’t a book you read for the plot. Therefore, the plot just fits in between Sophronia’s revelations, education, and exclamations. And you know that? I’m perfectly fine with that! Yes, this means the plot is just a series of semi-related events with minimal activity and motion. Things tend to happen just because Sophronia wants to be outlandish. The weakest part of Etiquette & Espionage is the plot. Temminnick jumps on the opportunity to set her daughter straight. After all, her darling Sophronia could certainly use some finishing! However, little do the Temminnick’s know that there is more to this school than meets the eye. When the headmistress of Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality arrives at the Temminnick home to recruit Sophronia to her school, Mrs. She much prefers inventing and exploring to tea parties and petticoats. Sophronia Angelina Temminnick isn’t your average girl. “No one said learning etiquette and espionage would be easy, my dear.”

“But I have advanced eyelash fluttering to practice, and a mathemathics problem concering how to order strychnine and a lamb dinner on a limited budget, and three chapters on court etiquette to read, and my hankerchief to starch, and the quadrille to memorize!” Wonderfully, Etiquette & Espionage states loudly from the beginning that this is not a book which will ever take these things seriously. I knew at once I was in for a fun ride. There’s something about Victorian England with all sorts of kooky clockwork inventions which is incredibly appealing to me. I’ve heard great things about both Finishing School and her adult series, Parasol Protectorate. My introduction to Gail Carriger’s steampunk books is a welcome one.
